P.S. 146 Reviews

The school received recommendations on their report card for the need to improve with parent relations. The open door policy seems to have reservations.

We've finally have found a school that is allowed to treat children as individuals and not memorization machines that should strive to test well above all else. Brooklyn New School (as it is known) is a very special place. My child is learning to love learning, to respect others, to have confidence in himself. The teachers are focused on what works for each child and very open to having conversations with parents. The learning is hands on and addresses a variety of learning styles. True, the school sometimes could communicate better with parents about specific activities or learning strategies in the classroom but if you ask questions, they will be answered. And as for the principal, she is very clear about what her priorities are as an educator. She is not as 'PR oriented' as some principals are, but she is smart, committed and respected by teachers and kids alike.

A place that respects the child and meets them where they are at. Incredible parental involvement.Books are everywhere and are always in use.Math and science are taught (as all classes) as intergral part of life not just a subject to pass then forget. chilldren learn respect by living out these ideas.

Most of the teachers are a great bunch of thoughtful educators. Classes are too large for K and 1st grades. Early childhood needs to be rethought. Lots of parental involvement; teachers welcoming parents to work with them in the classroom is one of the school's strengths. The community is a caring one, with parents who really do get involved in their children's education. Music program for early childhood and upper grades is very good-thanks to excellent staffing in this area. Artists in residence add dimension.

We've just moved to the area and my oldest daughter is 4 so I can't provide a review of any schools at this time but I would like to read reviews of Brooklyn New School.

The ratings on princpipal leadership is a 5. She shows alot of dedcation towards the program, her staff and children in the program. Teacher quality ratings is a 5, you can tell there is a love to learn within this program from all teachers and staff. Extacurricular activities ratings are a 5. tehre is always something for every child to do after school. Parent involvement, this rating I give a 5 the parents are part of the parent teacher cofnerences and volunteers for everything. Safety and discpline are rated as a 4 it is very good and a very safe place and atmosphere to bring your child. The overall quality is rated as a 5, for I would recommend the program to anyone and would endorese its candidacy. I would highly recommend the program to any parent.

Brooklyn New School is a refreshing change to our usual Public Schools in NYC. It's reputation is that it is 'Public School' like, but the administration and faculty largely object to this statement, since public schools are not privately funded and BCS is powered by community and parental involvement, donating their time and resources, to make it work. It's a warm place, where everyone is on a first name basis, the academic standard is on par with the best NYC schools, the staff and students are from a well represented, diverse and balanced cross section of the city. After school programs are offered, the children remain safely in the building with supervision until pick up time, there is an excellent student teacher ratio. Faculty and administration are professional, working well with the students, parents and each other. It is a very humane, resourceful public school. Good work!

My son went to this school for two years; its a diverse, wonderful community of learners; the principal tries hard to fight the pressure to create a cookie-cutter education while maintaining high standards; we have moved but miss it terribly; very unique!

My children have thrived in this wonderful school. The teachers are fantastic and go above and beyond the call of duty.
