P.S. 58 Carroll School Reviews

The atmosphere at school is very positive. The general curriculum at 58 is state-mandated, but the arts curriculum is strong: a strings program beginning in 2nd grade, drumming workshops, creative movement, visual art. Everyone takes science as a 'special' every week, and some twice a week. There is a French dual-language program for students (selected by lottery) beginning in Kindergarten. A new library should open this year. The playground for older children is still nothing but a vacant lot and the cafeteria seems a bit chaotic. The principal is approachable and involved and the community wide-ranging and enthusiastic. The after school is well-organized and consistent, run through Kids Orbit. A great public park is across the street, which makes for good community building and friendships between the children. We have been very happy at this school.

With the new principal in place, this school is doing great. You can see it on the kids' and parents' faces in the morning at dropoff; everyone is excited to be part of the school atmosphere. My daughter entered in K this year, and I'm glad she's going someplace where the mood is upbeat and everyone gets down to the business of teaching and learning. The results are impressive so far!

A great school. Very well rounded and filled with enrichment opportunities for the kids. We're thrilled and very happy.

Wonderful School that is part of a great nabe

After two years of forward movement, innovative curriculum, and a building after-school program, our principal was removed and the past four months has been utter turmoil in the school. We now have a new interim acting principal, who we all hope will restore stability and provide ongoing development of the curriculum and after school programming.

The academic program at PS 58 is quite strong. The teachers are very well trained and they work very hard. The principal has put a lot of work into choosing excellent teachers and support people. The children are well behaved, curious, and eager to learn. One terrific strength of the school is its diversity. There are all kinds and colors of children in this school, and it adds up to a great atmosphere. They live up to the high standards the principal sets. There are quite a few extracurricular activities, including a music program and an art program. The parents are involved and interested.

PS 58 is a very good school. My son is in a collaborative/integrated classroom. His teachers have been very skilled and competent. They teach using the Teacher's College reading and writing program - it is innovative and effective. I observed a second grade class reading quietly and independently - just wonderful! The music and science programs are very strong. The teachers keep us informed through meetings and curriculum letters sent home. The children are truly engaged in learning. The school is kept clean. The PTA is involved and organized; they have several fundraisers throughout the year. The school currently has several after-school activities but will add a full-fledged after-school program in the fall. Lastly, P.S. 58 has exceeded my expectations. It is definitely deserving of being added to the list of the 'well-known' highly sought-after Brooklyn public schools.
