Brooklyn Tech High School Reviews

I am currently a junior at the University of Maryland-College Park. As a former 'Technite' who graduated in 2006, I have to say I am happy with the education I received at BTHS. While I completely disagree with the major concept currently in place, the number of advanced placement classes I was able to take far outweighs any negatives. The workload definitely helped me prepare for the first semester of college (excluding finals). As far as teachers are concerned, there are a few whose egos need to be smashed, but overall I liked the teachers I had. Anyone who currently goes there or is a prospective student should take AP History with Mrs. Ross. She is by far the best teacher I have ever had. I attended Brooklyn Tech to get away from my local high school, and upon looking back at my decision I have no regrets.

My son is a freshman. So far he is as happy as I've ever seen him in any school. He is a former MS 51 student. He loves the school, loves each and every one of his teachers. He comes home smiling every day with stories to share. Homework so far has been very manageable, of course it's still early. We've had no complaints or problems with admistration and we have had to contact them a couple of times and got our questions answered quickly. My son enjoys the large school environment, surely a great pre-requisite for the college experience to come. He reports that there are about 30 students in each of his classes, no more than middle school. In a nutshell, we anticipate a great 4 years that will prepare him for what is to come.

Being of the specialized high school in NYC, this school could be and should be more organized, many freshman did not receive their school ID while photo have been uploaded to school in June, the ID staff did not provide any assistance to avoid further confusion, and since the school is big with 4000+ students, more guidance and preparation for the students will definitely make their transition to high school much more pleasant and less confusion. That being said, the amazing diversed and talented students body are mostly high achievers and self-motiviated students, the programs offered were amazing with very strong tech and science curriculums, the teachers are mostly dedicated and inspiring to students, and the math team is very competitive. But the class size is too crowded with 32-35 students, if that could be reduced to 26-28 students, then the learning environment will be even more desirable.

I dislike this school, it's unbearably hot, no air-conditions in 90%+ of the class rooms, the school is big but it is too small for 5,000 kids. The teachers mildy decent, they can't get kids inerested in subjects.

This schol should be given more resources. The students are amazing.

If the old principal hadnot been outed I would have given 5 stars. best 4 years of my life both academically and socially because of the wonderful environement and expectation of excellence.

BTHS is truly an outstanding school. The faculty is dedicated and inspiring. With over 4000 students, it is not for everyone but for a highly motivated self-starter, it is a wonderful place. The extremely diverse student body is one of its strengths but also hinders a cohesive sense of school spirit. (There are over 95 languages spoken at home here) All in all, there is no place I would rather have my daughter in high school

This is a great school. Not for the stupid or lazy. It is for motivated students who want to work and achieve success. As a current student, I can praise it greatly. Anyone that leaves just doesnt deserve to be there.

This school is not where I would want to send my child to. My daughter was accepted to BTHS and it was the worst experience of both our lives. Simply put, the Teachers, Staff and Administration do not care about the students. Parents think twice about sending your child to this school. My daughter left before the 1st. quarter. Very disappointed.

This is an excellent school, the classes are challenging and very difficult, you have to be intelligent to be in this school. This has nothing negative about it, if a student doesn't like this school, it's because they can't handle the challenges.

This is a good school. My eldest daughter attends (she is in 10th grade,) and she enjoys it thoroughly. The school has an abundance of extracurricular programs, which is fantastic, and most of the teachers are really great. My only complaint is that I really dislike how students have to pick 'majors' in sophmore year. It is so difficult to pick the career you wish to take on, while in college, so I think that putting this responsibility on a 10th grader is quite absurd.

This school has almost 5,000 students and if you child is not self-motivated it is very easy for him/her to get lost and fall through the cracks. It is a strong academic specialized science school with challenging courses in math and the sciences. The students are very bright but with 35 students in a class it is hard to get any individual attention. You do not get to know your teachers. The school has a wonderful Parents Association though and they will answer any questions you have and keep you informed about the school. The school has a new Principal and things will change for the better. The school is very good about emailing you often about any news and updates in the school. This communication has been great and you definitely will know what is going on at any given time.

This is the best school you will find in NYC. Great students, great teachers, a great experience overall. All arts, sports, everything is available in this school, above the extent. Parents are very involved with the school.

The school could be much greater. However, I feel that some of the heads of administration are restricting the students from getting the education they deserve. Many good teachers have left the school and many programs have been cut. The newspaper was recently cancelled because of absurd censorship. One should think about whether or not this school is really deserving of being called a specialized school. The students aren't getting the attention they deserve nor the education.

This school is bad. It does not allow off campus lunch, is really big and crowded. We get too little funds. For example in a chemistry class, the required materials are usually in short supply. The school is also too old.

Brooklyn technical high school is so horribly understaffed and so old that a student would have to go through alot of work just to get some help in their educations. The only good thing about brooklyn technical high school is that the students are given good preparation for college

Brooklyn Tech is an outstanding academic experience for students interested in science and engineering. It is very diverse with all races and groups of students. In a city where half of high school students not graduate from high school, Tech has almost a 98% success rate in sending its graduates to colleges. Tech is a big school and one of the largest in NYC. So there's lots of competition to secure a place in the top ranks. Although Bronx Science and Stuyvesant are more selective, based on their somewhat higher SSAT score requirements, you can't go wrong at Tech and may be better off if you have a passion for engineering.

Tech is a great school for motivated students who are willing to do a great deal of work. From Tech, students can get into top colleges based only upon their own limitations. Tech is not great for students in danger of falling through the cracks--there is little provision made for helping them due to the large size of the school, over 4000 students. The level of academic programs is first rate, with honors and AP classes available in good number. Music, art, sports, and a large number of clubs are available to follow up on any interest. Tech is enormously diverse, with many students who are immigrants from all over the earth: Russians, Middle Eastern, African-American, Latino, etc. In addition to earning a Regents Diploma, students select a major for their Junior and Senior years which adds to academic pressures but also offers advanced training in many areas.

The academics in this school is excellent. all my teachers were great. I graduated with 7 Advance Placement courses and pretty much skipped my first semester at college. And I am not even that bright. Since students from all over the city come here, there is very little parent involvement. The long commute home pretty much kills any participation in after school programs.

This school has outstsanding students. They are the reason the school does so well. The academics are of the hardest in the country. The music program is real good, especially the chorus. The athletics are better than most schools and this largely because of the coaching. The only thing is that the school should have more of is parental involvement.

The school is rather good; majority of the teachers are qualified and committed, the classes a challenging and there is additional help available if neccessary. There are plenty of extracurricular activities available however the school is best equiped for students inclined towards math and science versus more creative subjects, such as art.

They say BTHS is the lesser of the 3 top science HS in NYC, well I disagree. Not only will students receive a diverse, well-round education in science, engineering, and the arts, BTHS also provides a multitude of competitive sport teams that are always in contention for the city title. BTHS is a great place for your 9th grader to attend school. Its close to all transportation and is located in a neighborhood experiencing an unprecedented urban renaissance in which the property values have skyrocketed. If your child passes the test to get in, you can be sure that he or she will receive a top notch education.

I am an Alumna of Brooklyn Tech and can honestly say that some of the best professors I have ever had are in Brooklyn Tech. It's a big High School and allowed me to build my independence. The assortment of extracurricular activities allow a plethora of oppurtunities for the student body. The AP program is awesome- I came into college with 21 credits- way exceeding sophomore standing. I am also enrolled in a college ranked in the top 50 National Listings. I highly recommend going to this school.

As an alumni, I can testify to the incredible education available at Brooklyn Tech!

I loved Brooklyn Tech. The teachers there are superb. Each and every student must pick a 'major' during his/her sophomore year. The choices range from Biochemistry to Civil Engineering to Media. There is something for everyone. Also, many AP classes are offered. When I graduated, I had 16 college credits, which is equivalent to one full semester of college.
