The MDA summer camp is located in Spring Valley, NY. We serve children ages 6 through 21 who live in the tri-state area and have been diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease. Camp is a magical place offering a wide range of activities specially designed for young people who have limited mobility or use wheelchairs. Your experience can make a difference in the life of a child with a neuromuscular disease. MDA Camp Week is August 17 August 23, 2008 Volunteer Camp Counselors (18 yrs. old) and Lifeguards (21 yrs. old) are needed to assist campers in activities by meeting their physical and emotional needs in a manner consistent with the standards of MDA and to help carry out a program of adapted water and recreational activities designed to be enjoyable and safe. Counselor training is provided at no cost!
Skills: - Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and are responsible for the safety and well being of the camper with whom they are paired.
- In addition, the volunteer will assist with the care of the campers in his/her cabin, group and camp-wide.
- Volunteers are encouraged to develop age appropriate relationships with campers. Friendship is what makes this a wonderful experience.
- Volunteers have very little "down time" during the day. At night, volunteers are sleeping in a cabin with same sex volunteers and campers. A number of campers need repositioning during the night.
- Volunteers will need to assist campers with activities of daily living such as eating, showering, dressing and toileting depending on individual camper's needs.
- MDA Camp can be a wonderful experience for volunteer counselors. It is important to realize that this is not an experience without challenge. Volunteers need to have the ability to put the needs of others first.
- The health, safety and well being of our campers is our #1 priority.
